SUMMER THE WINTER UNWANTED

The sun briefly darkens
Returns darkens returns hides
White curtains stir.

The first gale of impending storm
Tremendous blasts

Four cotton flags snap wildly
Wet faces dry lungs shiver
Outside downpour and thunder
One bolt strikes scattering bricks.

Rising to look
At vapor and rubble
Near cool eternal relief.
Summer the winter unwanted
Delights but in delight
Skies clear and again
The hollow sun.

FORGOTTEN

Forests they sometimes forget
They are trees
Do not recall ancestral roots
In volcanic rock
They conquer land and even
Stumble into seas
Destined to fall.

I know I have forgotten
Those different parts of me
That together rule
I have forgotten them all.

SOUL

All that our spirit may be is the persistent glow
Of a stale cigarette discarded
Near a puddle of old rain.
